Pecking Order

I’m thinking of putting up a new sign at the studio:
“Please do not chase , yell at or grab the chickens.”
Why not? This puts them off laying eggs, which is their main job. Wouldn’t it put you off too? As they’re not familiar with rugby rules they don’t understand scrums or high tackles. The ringleader, aka Una Thurman , has a personality disorder and is likely to attack you, which won’t be pretty.
Enough said.

Chickens are delightful to paint. They are like feathered triangles as they peck at interesting things on the ground (and most things are interesting to a chook, especially if they move). They have beautiful colours – mine are Brown Shavers, a prosaic enough name, but they have touches of gold, mahogany and apricot , with bright red combs.

You don’t often have a reason just to play with lovely reds and oranges (or whatever colours you fancy) so it’s a lovely peaceful thing just to sit in the sun and sketch them busily going about their daily life. They’re quite easy to draw – as I said before , think of them as triangles with legs on, so they’re great sketching practice.

My last two workshops for the year are filling up, so if you’re interested in joining either of them please contact Nicole Russell – nicole@nicolerussellart.com – for more info or to book your space.

16th/17th September – “3 Waters” (We had such a good time at the first one of these that people wanted to stay on for a third day!)

4th/5th November – Beginners/Refresher Watercolour

No more workshops after these until 2024, as I am getting desperate to paint 🙂 But I do offer one on one tuition and critiques sessions and if you’d like to know more please get in touch.

Several people have asked how my spinning is going….here’s the result of my first fleece spun and knitted. I’m pretty pleased!

Keep warm and enjoy the rest of winter 🙂
